Virtual English: Internet Use, Language, and Global Subjects
(Book-length manuscript forthcoming on Routledge Press). This manuscript bridges the chasm between the hyperbolic perception and the everyday use of emergent technologies by examining alternative approaches and practices. Analyzing internet activities of non-mainstream participants and organizations reveals exchanges that simultaneously challenge and circumvent dominant routines, providing fresh interpretations of this important new medium. Rather than attempting to be a comprehensive study of internet use, this work provides a strategic analysis of a set of divergent practices that counter prominent notions about the deployment and meaning of electronic communication. My study locates instances where subjects use electronic media to resist popular understandings of cyberspace, computer-mediated communication, nation and community, presenting unexpected responses to the forces of globalization and predominant U.S. value systems. These populations contribute websites, conversations, and artifacts that employ English strategically, broadening and splintering the language to express their concerns in the manner they perceive as effective. Users thus illustrate opportunities to transmit information, conduct conversations, teach, and make decisions, in the process, shaping both language and technology.
